This photo shows some of the models which children (and their parents) could try to build with fischertechnik components. The small train-like vehicles change direction when they bump into each other:

On this photo I'm demonstrating different types of fischertechnik robots which could be programmed and controlled via serial link by a PC: balancing on a seesaw, phototaxis, following each other, climbing a hill etc. Some children managed quite well to build them within 1 or 2 hours.
